Adorable! |
Yesterday my dear friend and fellow thrift store addict Kris asked if I wanted to meet her and her sweet boys (J, age two my darling godson and his brother, baby C) at SVDP (Saint Vincent de Paul for the uninitiated) that night. I had been on a so-far unsuccessful hunt for an old chest of drawers to store my fabric and other sewing supplies and I thought this would be a good chance to look for one. Kris is one of my favorite thrifting partners because she shares my love of all things old, interesting, and just plain weird and she has a great eye. I started shopping at thrift stores (and rummage sales) in high school when I realized I could find the items I coveted but couldn't afford. In the beginning I mostly bought clothes, especially Ralph Lauren polos and button downs which were part of my high school uniform. Over the years my interest has broadened and now I like to look at everything. Literally everything. From baby clothes to office supplies to books to furniture I must see it all! Over the years I have had some pretty awesome finds including a vintage Gucci bag, brand new Tods, an amazing vintage lamb coat trimmed in mink and recently four yards of the above-pictured Lilly Pulitzer fabric for a mere $8! When I lived in Chicago I loved to visit the now-closed Children's Memorial White Elephant store on Fullerton and Halstead. It was full of designer cast-offs and you never knew what you'd find. My store of choice in GB is SVDP because I think they have the most eclectic mix of items. Last night I found a great chest of drawers; blonde wood, sort of a mid-century design with cool curvy hardware. $35 yes please! I can't wait to pick it up and get my sewing materials all organized. Oh, and I think J might have inherited his mom (and godmother's) eye. After I got home Kris texted me that an old Thomas the Tank toy that he picked up and she purchased for him for $1.50 sells used on Amazon for over $100. I've never been so proud!
