I have loved musicals since I was a little girl. When I was really little we lived in a teeny tiny duplex with a bathroom right off the living room. I would sit in the tub and my mom would rotate the television so I could watch from there and I would watch musicals for hours.
My interest in a particular show usually comes in phases. Right now I am loving Les Miz. I saw it a few weeks ago in the theatre and was just blown away and have been listening to the Les Miz station on my Pandora at work ever since. After seeing a local production of the Sound of Music a few months ago I downloaded that soundtrack and listened to it nonstop for weeks. Here are my top ten favorite musicals of all time:
1. Meet Me in St. Louis: When I was little I wanted to be Tootie. I have seen it so many times I could quote the entire movie by heart. If you've never seen it drop what you are doing immediately, find a copy, and watch it. It is amazing. Also, how does Judy Garland get her hair SO shiny?
2. Mamma Mia! Obviously a newer addition to the musical cannon but it's excellent. Funny and entertaining and just awesome. Morgan and I saw it in the theatre the night it came out (incidentally the same night the Dark Knight premiered, guess which theatre was more crowded?) and loved it so much we drove to Border's, bought the soundtrack, and drove around listening to it for an hour. Fantastic soundtrack. I also saw it on stage once and was less impressed.
3. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a musical I have seen live multiple times and every time I love it. Even the low-budget local productions are great. I defy you to watch it and not hum "Go go go Jo" for days.
4. White Christmas/ Holiday Inn: I am putting these two together since I usually watch them at the same time. Many people believe one is the sequel to the other but this is fallacious. I used to watch White Christmas every year during the holidays with my friend Lisa. Sometime we are going to do the "sisters" number and it will be awesome.
5. Les Miserables: Sadly I have never seen it live but I am confident I would love it.
6. Sound of Music: Julie Andrews is perfection. Some day I want to end a party by singing "So Long, Farewell".
7. Oklahoma: I was wildly fond of this one when I was in middle school. I thought I was so risque singing "I'm Just a Girl Who Can't Say No". Now I realize that was just awkward.
8. The Music Man: I have seen this live as well as the film and love both.
9. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers: The best wildly misogynistic film ever made! But really so so good. I love "Goin' Courtin'".
10. State Fair: I recently watched this for the first-time in a long time and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Runners Up: The Harvey Girls (second best wildly misogynistic film), Phantom of the Opera, Grease (no girl does not like Grease), Singin' In the Rain, My Fair Lady, The King and I, Guys and Dolls, Moulin Rouge!, Mary Poppins, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Evita, Easter Parade, How to Eat Like a Child (available on DVD in VERY limited release), the High School Musical franchise (seriously, they're really good), and Book of Mormon (I haven't seen it yet but I LOVE the soundtrack).
What did I miss? What's your favorite musical? Do you hate musicals? If so, what's wrong with you?
