Cape Love

I have wanted a cape for awhile but I could not find one that suited me.  Then around Thanksgiving I was purchasing fabric for some holiday sewing projects and I spotted the most lovely plaid wool.  It was a little expensive compared to what I usually spend on fabric but it was so pretty I had to have it.  I looked at the fabric store for a suitable cape pattern but really could not find anything I liked.  They were all too fussy or old ladyish and I wanted something very simple and classic with slits in the front to stick my hands through.
I searched online for a tutorial as I really like using tutorials as opposed to traditional patterns.  I just find them easier to follow and I'm generally very pleased with the ones I've tried.  The closest thing I could find was this fantastic children's cape tutorial but it didn't have slits in the front.  It looked super easy though so I decided to use it.  I also wanted to incorporate a vintage blonde mink coat I have.  The coat was starting to fall apart but I didn't want to get rid of it because it's so beautiful.  I wanted to recycle the collar and if possible more of the rest of it for trim.  Following the tutorial I bought navy blue satin to use as the lining.  Rather than make a collar out of the wool, I instead cut the collar off my mink and used it for the step that calls for inserting the collar between the coat and the lining.  Here is what I have so far:
Truly terrible picture but you get the idea?
I still have a few questions/issues to resolve but so far I'm pretty pleased.  Following the instructions of the tutorial I cut it out as a full circle.  However, in adult size rather than kid size I think it comes off as too wide.  I'm thinking about trimming down the front on both sides so it's narrower.  I also haven't put in the hand slits and I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to do that.  I am also considering trimming the bottom and/or the hand slits with some of the leftover mink.  I also need to select and put on a closure of some kind, likely just a single button at the top.  Wow, that sounds like a lot.  What do you think?  Any suggestions?  Have you ever made a cape or done a similar project?

  1. This looks super cute! I, on the other hand, am still figuring out how to sew a button.
